 Without a Trace

Terrina wasn't one for rules. She probably should have been up at the castle, but in all honesty... forget rules! She had wrapped herself up in her jacket and robes and was down in Hogsmeade, kicking a rock. Yes, kicking a rock. She didn't want to be at the school and it was the weekend. No one would miss her. No one cared, why should she bother with rules?

Eventually, she lost interest with her rock and trudged on her way, avoiding people for fear of getting caught and sent back before she was ready. It took a while, but she found a nice spot to sit, under a tree. Certainly not hidden, but you would have to look for her to find her, at the least.

I think this is the village I was born in, wasn't it? she thought to herself for a moment, before shrugging it off. Who cared?

A rush of cool air and a billowing black vapor at the edge of a darkened forest outside of Hogsmeade announced the presence of Liliana Delphine, even if it was silent. In her pale, slender hand she held a gleaming bloody blade, drip..drip..drip..the blood of the last person who had looked at her wrong fell from the tip in black drop after black drop. September was a truly lovely time for killing people.

Only a few days had passed since Antonin's return from his exile. Only a few days had passed since Liliana had told him that she loved him. And only a few days had passed since he felt it best to tell her he did not care for her at all, kiss her, then blow apart her door and leave her mansion and remain out of sight ever since. Since that night the human side, the Lili side, was gone. She had spent more and more time out of her home, keeping by her Master's side when not at work or out playing. Today was different though, today her Lord had given her a special task.

The Dark Lord had once had a follower by the name of Kevin Moore, a man Liliana had only met once and had had no real relationship with but she knew him nonetheless. Moore had disappeared and her Lord wanted to know why and where the coward was. You don't just hand in your resignation papers to the Dark Lord. You serve Him until your death. As Liliana had been told, Moore had two children, one male and one female. The female, the younger of the two, was at Hogwarts, a fourth year Hufflepuff. Liliana's task was to find her and bring her back so she could go through an interrogation on the whereabouts of her father.

She moved forward slowly out of the darkness of the forest and into the overcast light of Hogsmeade. She kept her distance from the shops and large groups, avoiding contact when she could. Liliana's hood remained up at all times covering her eyes from anyone who may be watching her. As she reached the end of the main road she turned off, she had scanned the entire main street and saw no sign of any Hogwarts student and certainly no bright eyed cheery Hufflepuff.

Dismayed but not completely deterred she began to walk up the path towards the Shrieking Shack where she would hide out over the course of the weekend when something caught her eye. It was a girl of what looked to be about fourteen sitting under a tree, all by herself. The sight brought an evil smile to Liliana's lips. She pulled her wand from inside her robes and transfigured one of the nearby rocks into a Great Dane puppy sending it on it's way towards the girl. Even if it wasn't who she was looking for Liliana could at least use the girl to bring Moore's daughter to her.

As she watched the puppy run she began to chase after it acting as though her dog had gotten away from her.

"Ransom! Bad chien! Come back 'ere!" She called out as she ran.

Terrina's head jerked up. It was getting cool outside and she was considering heading back up to the school and hide herself in the common room again when a voice caught her ears. It was close by, it was an adult. Was she caught?! ...no, thank the maker, the woman was chasing something. But what?

It was a puppy! Terrina loved animals. Even if she were to get caught and get in trouble for being here without permission, Terrina couldn't let the puppy roam on its own. She stood up and wiped herself off before going after the puppy as well. And, for the first in a very long time, Terrina had a smile on her face.

It looks cute she thought to herself.

As Liliana approached the tree that the girl had been sitting under she was delighted to see that her plan was working. The girl had gotten up to chase after the puppy too. A sick smile spread across Liliana's face as she pulled her wand from her robes once more and prepared to make her move.

"Oh merci, leetle girl, merci beaucoup for 'elping me. 'E can be such a 'andful sometimes." As she drew closer the flash of yellow and black on the badge of the girl's robes inside her jacket caught her eye. She was a Hufflepuff, even if this wasn't the right girl she could be used to get to Moore's daughter. Life had taken a decided upswing in Liliana's favor.

Her wand was raised and she brought it down in a graceful but firm sweeping motion as she watched the girl's back to her chasing after the puppy that was running back and forth just inside the forest.

"Incarcerous!" The look of pure joy on the face of Liliana was disturbing as she watched the thick ropes shoot from the end of her wand towards the young girl.

Terrina kept after the puppy, still smiling. It was fun, to run after him. She'd loved animals all her life, this was something she missed terribly. He was bouncing a little and she kept smiling. No sound came out her mouth as she did, besides her breathing from running around. She heard the woman call after her, thanking her. Terrina stopped and waved a little to acknowledge that she was spoken to and turned to keep running after the puppy. He was so cute! Maybe the lady wouldn't tell on her for being out here if she helped her...

It happened too fast! Terrina was on the ground before she knew what hit her. Her glasses fell from her face as she hit face first, luckily. Had she landed on her back, it would have hurt terribly. She didn't know what was going on. Had she tripped? Stumbled? She tried to get up, when it registered what had happened. She'd heard the woman cast a spell! What was going on?!

"Wh...wha-?" She asked aloud, the first words she'd spoken in months. Her voice cracked slightly from the time of disuse. Her vocal chords were not used to it at all.

"Avada Kedavra!" Green light erupted from the end of Liliana's long and slender wand. It hit the "puppy" and as it fell to the ground it transformed back into a rock. It was a needless gesture but she wanted the girl to make sure she knew exactly what kind of person she was dealing with.

"Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Didn't your mummy ever teach you not to talk to strangers leetle girl? Especially in such dark times, you never know 'oo to trust. Eet's no matter now, she won't see you again." Liliana stepped forward and waved her wand raising the girl's body off the ground and gripping the end of one of the ropes tightly.

"You never should 'ave left ze castle, zere are rules for a reason. Zey are to protect innocent leetle girls like you from monsters like me. What eez your name and your year? And if you scream I'll make you feel such unimaginable pain zat you will wish zat you were never born. Now speak." Her eyes were cold and calculating as she slowly rotated her wrist hanging the girl upside down, taunting her. Her own voice was quiet and had a melodic quality to it. The idea of torturing this girl made her feel more alive than she had in days.

Terrina heard the curse and she closed her eyes. She was sure the curse was for her. She waited for long, horrible moments, but when death did not embrace her, she knew it had to have been the poor puppy. She couldn't see more than a couple feet from her face at best, and tears welled in her eyes. That poor puppy!

She struggled to get free, wanting to get away and hide in the safety of the Common Room. She knew she couldn't break free, but she would try anyway. She struggled and struggled, growing tired, quickly. It was no use and she finally just went limp. Then the monster mentioned her mother. Her mother was gone, the people who raised her were gone and had been for three years. Her eyes watered again and tears fell. She didn't want to think about that anymore!

"...T...Terrina..." She said in a hoarse voice. Her own voice sounded... foreign and alien to her. She was so used to her silence that she had forgotten its sound. "Fourth... year. Terrina, I'm a fourth year..." Her voice cracked as she used it. She didn't like it.

Liliana laughed, it was soft at first but then grew until she was laughing outright. Fortune and fate had smiled upon her that day, this was the girl she was sent to find, to capture, to bring back. It had been far easier than she had ever imagined.

"Well, T...Terrina...We 'ave some very important business to attend to. Zere are a few people 'oo are very anxious to meet you and zey don't like to be kept waiting." Liliana closed her eyes and cleared her mind focusing on her destination. Her orders were clear, find the girl, bring her to the Riddle House, to whatever grisly end awaited the girl. In the same billowing black vapor that brought her both hunter and prey disappeared into nothing.
